What would happen if all plants died?
We hit the ground running with this theme as the majority of children already had some great knowledge including that plants produce oxygen therefore, if the plants died then there would be no oxygen meaning that humans would not be able to breathe. We eased ourselves slowly into the theme by taking a nature walk round the school and noting down which plants were already beginning to grow in early spring and those who had remained green throughout winter. Surprisingly, many weeds seem to like to grow before the flowers!
Conversations and research soon turned to find out how plants reproduce and the different ways that seeds travel. As this was a science topic, the children were tasked with devising a 'fair test' to see if seeds will grow with one of the vital components of soil, water or light missing ........ results will follow soon however so far, interesting things have occurred!
